PLEASE NOTE:
It is your responsibility to know the expiration date of your license, to maintain your renewal requirements, and to submit your application packet for renewal.

License Renewal Procedure

Effective June 1, 2010Changes October 2013

This is a process for renewal of a standard license only. Renewal of one year license, one year emergency license, and interim license must be sent to the Mississippi Department of Education. Adding endorsements and upgrading a license must be sent to the Mississippi Department of Education. Contact the MDE for the process for these other license.

The process for renewal of a standard license only is the following.

1. Using a computer go to www.mde.k12.ms.us

2. Under Educator on the top right click on ELMS.

3. Click into "Create a New User Account" on top right. Set up your own ELMS account by clicking through the questions asked. You will decide on your own User ID and Password. Each educator can update her/his own profile. Make sure you put your e-mail address in the system. After getting the account, login to system. The Educator Licensure Management System will be on the screen.

4. Once educators have set up their own account, they can edit their profile as needed if their address, name or phone changes. YOU MUST PUT YOUR NEW CORRECT EMAIL IN THE SYSTEM.

5. The Educator Licensure Management System will be on the screen. Click on Educator. There will be a label called View Your Credentials.

6. Click on View Your Credentials.

7. On the left side click on professional development, there will be 3 sections listed CEU, College Credits, or National Board Certificate. You may click to add to any of the 3 sections.

(EXAMPLE: Click on Add a CEU. As CEUs are earned for renewal, each educator needs to enter it on this page. At the top of the page, it is already calculated for the number of CEUs or courses needed to renew based on the Class of the license. When enough CEUs are entered to renew, the page will give the educator the option of filing a renewal application.)

8. Once the educator has entered all the required criteria, a link on the screen will be displayed to SUBMIT renewal application. Do this to submit the electronic application. It will go to the ELMS Queue of the school district superintendent or his designee for approval. Mr. Van Alexander is his designee.

9. When the educator has completed the entry and submitted the renewal application on the computer, he/she will need to send the original CEU certificates earned, or the official sealed transcript of courses earned, and/or national certification information to Mr. Van Alexander in the Personnel Office of DeSoto County Schools. These must be sent for verification of the computer information by the Personnel Office of DeSoto County Schools.

10. Once the application is approved by the Personnel Office of DeSoto County Schools, the license will be renewed and

11. CHANGE:  ONCE IT IS PROCESSED (ALLOW ABOUT 10 WORKING DAYS AFTER YOU SEND ORIGINAL CERTIFICATES TO MR. VAN ALEXANDER), YOU WILL NEED TO GO BACK ONLINE TO THE MDE. Under Educator on the top right click on ELMS. Click ON License Look Up on the right. Put in your Social Security #. Click Search Educators. PRINT your renewed license off. Send the copy of the new license to Kerry Baker in the Employee Services Department of DeSoto County Schools. REMEMBER: As a result of the original certificates now being available online, the OEL (Office of Educator Licensure) will no longer automatically mail original certificates to educators. Email is the quickest and most efficient way for the OEL to communicate with the educator if there is a deficiency with the application, or to notify the educator once the licensure request has been processed.

Professional development for license renewal (CEUs or coursework) must be completed during the validity period of a 5-year standard license. MDE does not accept CEUs for less than 0.5 or 5 contact hours. Teachers, please remember, you cannot repeat a CEU and use it again to renew your license.

SEMI credits for Career Administrators will be loaded into the ELMS professional development files by MDE. CEUs earned through the MDE eLearning for Educators will also be loaded into ELMS by MDE.
